Project Officer (Community Engagement)
£23,000 + generous holiday + competitive contributory DC pension scheme
Fixed-term contract for 18 months
Based South Lakeland District Council, Kendal
About the role
At the Canal & River Trust, we look after 2,000 miles of canals, rivers and reservoirs across England and Wales, because we believe that life is better by water. We are now looking for an experienced Project Officer to take responsibility for a range of community engagement activities as part of one of our latest restoration projects. The project involves celebrating and creatively linking three highly significant historical structures – Stainton Aqueduct, Sedgwick Aqueduct and Hincaster Tunnel – across a 4km stretch of the Lancaster Canal.
Focusing on the themes of volunteering, community co-creation, education and heritage interpretation, you’ll deliver a programme of events and activities that will be key to the project’s success. This will include recruiting new volunteers and developing practical working partnerships with a variety of local organisations. The role will involve regular travel to the project site and, on occasion, there will also be the potential to work from home or within the local community.
We’re looking for an experienced project officer with a proven track record in community or partnership-based work, and high levels of commitment, motivation and drive. You will be skilled at planning, organising and delivering relevant activities and events. You also need to be a strong negotiator and relationship-builder who is confident working with a wide range of people, including contractors, partners, local community members and volunteers.
One of the UK’s biggest charities, we maintain 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs, along with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings – preserving them for future generations. We believe living waterways transform places and enrich lives. Achieving this vision will be a fascinating challenge. Come and be part of it.
We aim to represent the diverse communities we are part of and welcome applicants from across all sectors of the community. We strongly believe that a diverse workforce brings with it a diversity of ideas, thinking and ways of working which enhances what we do.
